1:1 Coaching · Limited spots · From £1,999

Everything in EM Accelerator. Plus me in your corner.

Personal 1:1 coaching for engineering managers who want more than a self-paced course. Direct work with me to navigate your real situation, on your real team, in real time.

I only take on a small number of coaching clients at a time, because the work has to be real to be worth your money. If you're stuck, newly promoted, or about to step into the role, this page should tell you whether it's a fit. The discovery call is where we figure out the rest.

// 01 · Who this is for

Is this for you?

Three types of people get the most out of coaching with Ryan. You should recognise yourself in at least one of them.

01
You're a new EM

You got promoted in the last few months. You're surrounded by problems you've never solved before, a difficult report, your first perf cycle, a team that doesn't quite trust you yet. You want someone in your corner who's been through it.

02
You're an EM who's stuck

You've been doing this 1 to 3 years. You're competent but not progressing. You can feel there's a next level, better strategy, more influence, harder conversations, but you're not sure how to get there. A self-paced course won't unstick you. A second pair of eyes might.

03
You're a senior IC about to step up

You've been offered a manager role, or you're about to be. You've seen managers do it badly and you don't want to be one of them. You want to learn the job before you have to do it, and have someone to call when reality hits.

If you recognised yourself in any of these, let's talk →

// 02 · What you get

What coaching with Ryan looks like

The exact shape of each engagement is tailored on the discovery call. Here's the floor.

01
Direct 1:1 work with Ryan

A fixed engagement tailored to your goals. Not a script, not a curriculum. Your situation, your team, your stuck points.

02
Async access between sessions

Slack or WhatsApp for the moments you need a fast sanity check before walking into the meeting that matters.

03
Co-created artefacts

A 90-day plan, a promo packet, a difficult-conversation script, reviews of your real docs. Whatever moves you forward.

04
Full EM Accelerator included

Course, community, articles, office hours. The whole self-paced library, on top of everything above.

Engagements start from £1,999. We'll talk through what makes sense for your situation on the call.

Why work with Ryan

Ryan Murphy

Top-rated 6x instructor at Dometrain, two-year LeadDev programme committee member, and speaker at LeadDev and CTO Craft with nearly 20 years experience in Software Engineering.

I built and led engineering teams at Yelp for nearly half a decade, as part of nearly 20 years in tech. I write to 80,000+ followers every week. EM Accelerator is the programme I wish existed when I made the leap to management.

Coaching with Ryan isn't a framework dump. It's working through your specific situation with someone who's actually done the job, not just written about it.

Ryan offers a complete leadership package with insights, tools, and community support you won't get from onboarding. He's been in the EM trenches long enough to be your best guide to mastering this difficult role.

I’ve known Ryan for a long time, and if you’re an engineer stepping into leadership, or trying to do it better, you should be talking to him. He’s that rare combination: an excellent engineering manager and a genuinely great coach. He doesn’t lecture. He helps you think clearly about your situation and figure out what to do next. If you’re considering coaching to level up as a manager, I can’t recommend him highly enough.

Ryan’s work has weight. He writes about engineering management with practical clarity and hard-won judgment. Trust, feedback, ambiguity, tension, the decisions no framework can make for you. If his EM Accelerator carries the same honesty as his writing, it will be worth serious attention.

Ryan Murphy’s insights are valuable for any engineer looking to level up. Unlike many industry voices, his background as an Engineering Manager allows him to bridge the gap between technical execution and leadership.

Ryan’s content feels very real and honest: actual day-to-day engineering leadership experience, not just high-level theory. I really appreciate how openly he shares challenges, lessons learned, and vulnerable moments while staying practical and relevant to what engineering managers deal with today.

Common questions

The rest, including exact session structure and what happens at the end of an engagement, we'll cover on the call.

The course gives you the frameworks. Coaching gives you the frameworks AND someone to apply them with you, on your specific situation. Most people benefit hugely from the self-paced course alone, coaching is for people who want personalised work on their actual team, their actual goals, their actual stuck points.
Yes, and they often do. EM coaching is exactly what L&D budgets are for. Ryan can provide a one-pager you can send to your manager covering scope, outcomes, and ROI. Just ask after your discovery call.
Most coaches in this space are either ex-CTOs charging thousands a session and aimed at director-level leaders, or generalist career coaches without engineering management experience. Ryan sits in the middle, a former working EM at a company you've heard of, focused on the actual job most managers do day-to-day, at a price personal-development budgets can absorb.
Thirty minutes. Ryan will ask about your situation and goals, and you'll get a clear picture of whether coaching makes sense for you. If it does, Ryan will walk you through what an engagement would look like for your situation and what it would cost. No pressure to commit on the call, you can take time to decide.
